About
This website is a proof of concept of an Agent Domain of the upcoming global metaverse based on the Open Grid Protocol!
What is it?
The metaverse is changing, it's growing up from walled gardens to a decentralized, global network of servers, being able to interoperate with each other and allowing a user to seamlessly go on from part of the world to another.
This means:
- No need to create yet another account!
- No to create yet another avatar and style it!
Just travel the world without boundaries induced by walled gardens!
This Agent Domain is part of this upcoming network and is the first open source implementation of one of the main components making up the new metaverse. An Agent Domain is like the social networking part of the virtual world, it allows you to manage your inventory, your profile, your friends and much more.
What is it based upon?
The whole concept of an interoperable metaverse is defined by the Architecture Working Group, led by Linden Lab and made up of many interested residents and institutions. It is an open project to define an open protocol for connecting virtual worlds, the Open Grid Protocol.
This Agent Domain is based upon work done in the pyogp group, a group dedicated to implementing the Open Grid Protocol in Python. pyogp is Open Source Software and so is this Plone add-on and the underlying library.
What is the state of this project
As it says in the introduction, it's a proof of concept. It mainly shows that implementing an Agent Domain separately from Linden Lab is possible. It does not yet implement any security mechanisms, like encrypting traffic etc. On the other hand you also cannot yet do much with it. But what you can do is to get an account here and login to an OpenSim server.
Who made it?
This implementation was started by Christian Scholz of COM.lounge. It wouldn't be possible without the help of many people, especially those who work in the Architecture Working Group.
Thanks go to Mark Lentczner (Zero Linden), Tess Chu (Tess Linden) and Infinity Linden for doing all the specification work. Thanks go to Enus Linden, Locklainn Linden, Lawson English (Sajanai Kuhn), JB Kraft for hacking and helping on pyogp on which this component is based on. Thanks go also to Dirk Krause (Barthomlomew Kleiber) for helping with testing it. Thanks go also to Linden Lab in general for starting and supporting this project. Last but not least many thanks go to the developers of tcpdump and Wireshark because their tools made it easier to find the differences between the specification and reality.
Also many thanks to Zha Ewry (David Levine) for creating the initial OGP patch for OpenSim without that this Agent Domain wouldn't make much sense.
Now how can I start?
